Our Vocabulary:
A Reflex:
•Is an involuntary movement which responds to an external stimulus – an example could be a ‘knee jerk’ reaction to a strike under the knee, or the right arm and right leg straightening when the head is turned towards the right!
Primary Reflex: also called Primitive or Early Reflex
•A Primary Reflex starts in the womb (in utero) and at birth. It is useful for a short period of our development but must slowly calm down and allow our body a whole range of other movements.
•All Primary Reflexes must have been integrated in a broader range of movements, by age 3 to 4 - and totally by age 6 or 7.
•Primary Reflexes give way to ‘adult’ or ‘postural’ reflexes. Non ‘integrated’ reflexes are also called ‘retained’ reflexes.
Bridging Reflex: are similar to Primary Reflexes
•Which must be integrated by age 3 or 4.
•But they start after birth only, in NEU.WAYS Therapy we treat Bridging Reflexes as Primary Reflexes and help the client integrate them as well.
NEUral pathWAYS:
•These are the ‘roads’ opened in our brain between neurons, by electrical impulses created by repetitions of our movements.
•Although only movements can open these pathways, the pathways can be used for movements as well as ‘cognitive’ pursuits: thoughts, reading, speaking, singing, counting and reciting.
•The Primary Reflexes are the first movements to open some of those pathways.
•Retained Primary Reflexes prevent more/different movements from being performed – so they prevent more Neural Pathways from opening.
•Until all Neural Pathways in our brain are opened, our brain is not finished and the protective insulation, which should be built around the electrical impulses, cannot be built so this affects the speed and precision of our movements, as well as our ability to ‘multi-task’ (skip and sing etc at the same time).
